The Hardest Thing

 

            Letting go is the hardest thing.

            All instincts say "Stay!

           Stay awhile longer."

 

            When they're young  and full of fun,

            We don't think of the hard time of leaving.

            But day follows day, filled with play and

               and belly-rubs and growing,

            Bringing laughs, challenges, triumphs,

               and, finally, tears.

            For when growing is done,

               it's time to let them go.

 

            But they will never go from our hearts.

            The memories of all those days of growing

               stay with the witness who helped

               along the way.

            It is then we have to do the hardest thing,

            The most loving thing,

            And let them go.
